In Pavel and the Tree Army, Pavel is a new American, excited about his new country. When his rabbi tells him that the Civilian Conservation Corps is hiring young people, Pavel is thrilled, and he heads off to plant trees, build dams, and take care of the land.
Others on the crew are unkind to immigrants like Pavel, suggesting that because they were born elsewhere, they are not really American. But, on the Fourth of July, Pavel and his friends accomplish a feat that gives them a deeply-rooted sense of national pride and belonging – they learn to sing America’s brand new National Anthem.
