In September 1910, seventeen-year-old Hannah “Annie” Shapiro worked sewing pockets for the Hart, Schaffner and Marx clothing company in Chicago. The young Russian immigrant had been a garment worker for the past five years. When the foreman reduced the workers’ already-low wages, Annie decided to take a stand. She began a strike that went on for months and eventually involved 40,000 workers across Chicago. The inspiring true story of how a strike started by an eighteen-year-old Russian Jewish immigrant made a difference in the lives of garment workers across Chicago. 

Book includes an 8-page Reader's Theater script. The script has parts for five to eight readers, and a note to students provides tips for performing Reader's Theater. A note to teachers also provides further detail about staging Reader's Theater performances.
